i was in the middle of watching this series and being lowkey frustrated with her character with the lack of narrative drive and the passivity of her character when everyone else was actively dealing or struggling with something (capheus with his mothers’ illness; kala with her wedding; sun with her decision to go to prison to protect her family; nomi with her forced institutionalization and all the shit that followed) when it hit me that her struggle was the simple act of living to have gone through what she did and still find in herself to make it through another day and yet another day when all you want is to lay down on the top of the mountain and let the cold find you depression and suicidal ideation don’t make for comfortable television or immediately accessible characters and riley really doesn’t make things easy for you but there’s a reason why the season’s climax is about her saving her cluster by confronting and overcoming her trauma because that’s what the show is about the strength one finds in love and connection and knowing they are not alone how important that is how much it hurts in the good life-giving way when people care about each other ( notahammer )
